Abstract: Since urbanization will support the development of modern service industry and modern service industry will enhance the level of urbanization,the coordinated development of the two are very important in promoting the regional economic growth,Therefore,the paper,by constructing the coordinated development index system between urbanization and modern service industry,measures the coordinated development between urbanization and modern service industry from 2000 to 2012 of the five northwestern provinces.The results showed that:the coordinated development of the two in Shaanxi has experienced disorder — on the verge of imbalance — barely — primary coordinated process and coordination in 12 years;Xinjiang, Qinghai and Ningxia have experienced disorder — on the verge of disorder — barely coordination process;Gansu province is still in a disorder — on the stage of disorder.Generally speaking,types of coordinated development of the five northwestern provinces are changing as time going on.Finally,the paper puts forward that the northwestern provinces should seize the opportunity of constructing the“Silk Road Economic Belt”,working on the urban development strategic plan beneficial to the modern service industry development,making greater efforts in fundamental construction of urban information,to provide favorable guarantee for modern service industry development.
