Abstract: This paper empirically examines the existence of marital discrimination in P2P lending platform, based on the data from “Renrendai” lending platform. In order to investigate the interaction of marriage and sex, the product of the two’s product variable is introduced in this paper. After controlling the order variables and individual variables, the result shows that the investors prefer to lend to the married borrowers and the married men borrowers rather than the divorced borrowers. Furthermore, the study in this paper shows that the married borrowers and the married men borrowers have higher default rates, and the divorced borrowers have lower default rates. Then it can be concluded that the marriage-based discrimination is an irrational behavior. Finally, after two kinds of robustness tests, the conclusion of the paper is still valid.
