Abstract: On the basis of understanding the connotation of the new-type urbanization, an evaluation system of new-type urbanization was established in the paper, which was composed of four subsystems including economic urbanization, space urbanization, social urbanization and resources and environment urbanization. The coupling coordination degree evaluation model was adopted to measure the new-type urbanization coordinated development level in Xinjiang. Moreover, a quantitative evaluation was conducted on the urbanization level and the four subsystems of coordinated development of 15 regions and prefectures in Xinjiang from the spatial-temporal variation characteristics. The results showed that from the point of time-series, the urbanization development indexes of economy, space, social and resources & environment respectively showed obvious rising trend from the 2002 to 2015, but impact of the historical conditions and internal and external factors in different period made the dominant driving forces of urbanization present a clear stage characteristic. Meanwhile, the coupling coordination degree was on the rise during this period, namely from 0.0844 in 2002 to 0.4701 in 2015. However, the type of coupling coordination was still in the phase of mild disorder until 2015.There was a certain distance away from the general coordination phase, and a big gap from high coordination and extreme coordination. From the spatial distribution of it in 2015, the new urbanization development level and the coordination development level of economy, space, social and resources & environment had significant characteristics with the low level of overall development, obvious regional differentiation and so on.
